Common use

Dulera (mometasone furoate and formoterol fumarate dihydrate) is a combination inhaled medication prescribed for the maintenance treatment of asthma in patients aged 12 years and older whose asthma is not adequately controlled on an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) alone. This dual-action inhaler combines two essential components: mometasone furoate is a potent inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) that works by reducing chronic airway inflammation, decreasing mucus production, and suppressing the immune-mediated processes that trigger asthma symptoms. Formoterol fumarate is a long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist (LABA) that relaxes the smooth muscles surrounding the bronchial airways, providing sustained bronchodilation and improved airflow for up to 12 hours. Together in a single metered-dose inhaler, Dulera provides comprehensive, around-the-clock asthma control by addressing both the underlying inflammation and bronchoconstriction. Dulera is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used for acute asthma attacks. Buy Dulera online at DutyPills for affordable asthma maintenance therapy with reliable, fast delivery.

Dosage and direction

Dulera is administered via a metered-dose inhaler (MDI), typically two inhalations twice daily, in the morning and evening, approximately 12 hours apart. Shake the inhaler vigorously for at least five seconds before each use. Prime the inhaler before first use or if it has not been used for more than five days by releasing four test sprays into the air away from the face. Breathe out fully, then place the mouthpiece in your mouth and inhale slowly and deeply while pressing down on the canister. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, then exhale slowly. Wait at least 30 seconds between inhalations. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after each use and spit out the rinse water to reduce the risk of oral candidiasis (thrush) and hoarseness. Do not exceed the prescribed dose. Dulera should not be used to relieve acute bronchospasm; always keep a short-acting rescue inhaler (such as albuterol) available for emergencies.

Precautions

Before starting Dulera, inform your doctor if you have a history of heart disease, coronary artery disease, cardiac arrhythmias, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders (hyperthyroidism), seizure disorders, osteoporosis, cataracts or glaucoma, tuberculosis (active or latent), or systemic fungal, bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections. Inhaled corticosteroids like mometasone may suppress the immune system, increasing vulnerability to infections. Monitor for signs of worsening asthma, oral thrush (white patches in the mouth), changes in heart rate or rhythm, adrenal suppression, or decreased bone mineral density with long-term use. Children and adolescents using inhaled corticosteroids should have their growth monitored regularly. Do not abruptly switch from systemic corticosteroids to Dulera alone without a proper tapering schedule supervised by your doctor.

Contraindications

Do not use Dulera if you are allergic to mometasone furoate, formoterol fumarate, or any other component of the inhaler formulation. Dulera is strictly contraindicated as monotherapy for the primary treatment of acute asthma episodes, including status asthmaticus, where intensive emergency measures are required. LABA medications should not be used without a concurrent inhaled corticosteroid.

Possible side effect

Common side effects of Dulera include headache, nasopharyngitis (common cold symptoms), throat irritation, sinusitis, hoarseness or voice changes (dysphonia), cough, and oral candidiasis (thrush), which can be minimized by rinsing the mouth after each use. Less frequent side effects include muscle cramps, tremor, and palpitations. Serious but uncommon side effects may include paradoxical bronchospasm (worsening wheezing immediately after inhalation), severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, angioedema), cardiac arrhythmias or significant changes in heart rhythm, hypokalemia, hyperglycemia, adrenal suppression, pneumonia, or a significant worsening of asthma symptoms. If you experience chest tightness, worsening breathing, rapid heartbeat, or any alarming symptoms after using Dulera, seek immediate medical attention.

Drug interaction

Dulera may interact with other inhaled or systemic corticosteroids (additive immunosuppressive effects), additional long-acting beta-agonists (increased risk of cardiovascular side effects), strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, and ritonavir (which can increase mometasone systemic exposure), beta-blockers (which may diminish the bronchodilatory effect of formoterol), diuretics and xanthine derivatives (which may potentiate hypokalemia), MAO inhibitors, and tricyclic antidepressants (which may potentiate cardiovascular effects of formoterol). Inform your doctor about all prescription medications, over-the-counter products, and supplements you are taking.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose of Dulera, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular twice-daily schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one. Maintaining consistent dosing is important for optimal asthma control.

Overdose

An overdose of Dulera may lead to exaggerated corticosteroid effects (adrenal suppression, immune suppression), cardiac arrhythmias, tremor, headache, palpitations, tachycardia, hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, and in severe cases, cardiac arrest. If you suspect an overdose or experience alarming cardiovascular symptoms, seek immediate emergency medical attention. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic, including cardiac monitoring and potassium replacement as needed.

Storage

Store the Dulera inhaler at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius, away from heat, open flame, moisture, and direct sunlight. The canister is pressurized; do not puncture or expose to temperatures above 49 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit). Keep the inhaler capped when not in use and out of the reach of children. Discard the inhaler after the labeled number of actuations have been used, even if the canister does not feel empty.
