Common use

Meclizine is an antihistamine medication belonging to the class of anti-emetics — drugs specifically designed to prevent nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. This trusted anti-nausea medication is widely used to treat or prevent motion sickness symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and dizziness that occur during travel by car, boat, plane, or other modes of transportation.

Meclizine is also an effective vertigo treatment, prescribed for balance disorders caused by diseases of the body's vestibular system or inner ear problems. Conditions such as Meniere's disease, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), and other vestibular disorders respond well to meclizine therapy. By reducing the sensitivity of the inner ear's balance centers and blocking signals to the brain's vomiting center, meclizine provides reliable relief from dizziness, spinning sensations, and associated nausea. Meclizine is also sometimes used to manage nausea and vomiting caused by radiation therapy.



Dosage and direction

The recommended adult dose of meclizine varies depending on the condition being treated. For motion sickness prevention, take a single dose of 25 mg to 50 mg about 1 hour before travel. The first dose should always be taken at least one hour before departure to allow the medication time to take effect, as its anti-nausea action usually continues for about 24 hours. The dose may be repeated every 24 hours while travelling to maintain continuous motion sickness protection. Do not exceed 2 tablets (50 mg) in a 24-hour period.

For inner ear disorders and vestibular conditions, the usual dose ranges from 25 mg to 100 mg daily in divided doses. For vertigo treatment specifically, 25-100 mg daily in divided doses is typically prescribed, with the dosage adjusted based on the severity of symptoms and individual response. For people receiving radiation treatment, the usual dose is 50 mg given 2 to 12 hours before radiation therapy.

Children's dose is generally about one-half of the adult dose, though meclizine is not recommended for children under 12 years of age. Take meclizine with a full glass of water. The fruit-flavoured tablets can be chewed, swallowed whole, or dissolved in the mouth for convenience. Do not use it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended by your healthcare provider.



Precautions

Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert, as meclizine can cause significant drowsiness and impair your ability to react quickly. This anti-nausea medication affects the central nervous system and may slow your thinking and motor responses. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking meclizine, as alcohol intensifies drowsiness and sedation.

Usage of meclizine is not recommended in children under 12 years of age without specific medical guidance. It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly necessary — consult your doctor about the risks and benefits. While meclizine is classified as generally safe during pregnancy, individual circumstances may vary. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication, particularly drowsiness and dizziness, and should exercise extra caution.



Contraindications

You should not take meclizine if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. Use with caution if you have asthma or other breathing disorders, as meclizine may thicken respiratory secretions. This medication is also contraindicated or requires careful monitoring in patients with glaucoma (particularly narrow-angle glaucoma), an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), or problems with urination, as meclizine's anticholinergic effects can worsen these conditions. Inform your doctor about all existing medical conditions before starting vertigo treatment or motion sickness prevention with meclizine.



Possible side effects

Meclizine can cause drowsiness — the most commonly reported side effect — as well as dry mouth, blurred vision, fatigue, and headache. Other possible side effects include nausea (paradoxically), constipation, diarrhea, rash, and urinary retention. These effects are generally mild and often diminish as your body adjusts to the medication.

Meclizine has also been associated with hypotension (low blood pressure) and heart palpitations in some patients. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or other signs of a serious allergic reaction. Report any persistent or worsening side effects to your healthcare provider for evaluation and possible dosage adjustment.



Drug interactions

Taking alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, sleep aids, or other central nervous system depressants with meclizine can significantly increase drowsiness and sedation. This combination should be avoided or carefully managed under medical supervision. Other antihistamines, opioid pain medications, and muscle relaxants can also enhance the sedative effects of meclizine.

Tell your doctor about all your prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Anticholinergic medications (such as certain bladder or GI medications) may have additive effects when combined with meclizine, increasing the risk of dry mouth, constipation, and urinary retention. Do not start a new medication without telling your doctor, especially if you are being treated for a vestibular disorder or inner ear condition.



Missed dose

If you take meclizine only when needed (such as for motion sickness), you may not have a regular dosing schedule. If you are taking the medication regularly for a vestibular disorder or vertigo treatment, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to take the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.



Overdose

Overdose symptoms of meclizine may include extreme drowsiness, confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness. Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. In children, overdose may also cause excitability, hallucinations, or restlessness. Contact your local poison control center immediately for guidance on meclizine overdose management.



Storage

Store meclizine at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C), away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep the medication in its original container with the lid tightly closed. Keep all medicines away from children and pets. Do not use meclizine past its expiration date.
