Common use

Prinivil (lisinopril) is a highly effective ACE inhibitor belonging to the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor class of cardiovascular medications. This trusted blood pressure medication works by relaxing blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more smoothly and reducing the workload on the heart.

Precautions

Before taking Prinivil, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to lisinopril or to other ACE inhibitors (e.g., captopril, benazepril, enalapril, ramipril); or if you have any other allergies, including an allergic reaction after exposure to certain membranes used for blood filtering (dialysis).

Before using this medication, provide your doctor or pharmacist with your complete medical history, especially of: kidney disease, liver disease, high blood levels of potassium (hyperkalemia), severe dehydration and loss of electrolytes such as sodium, blood vessel disease (e.g., collagen vascular diseases such as lupus, scleroderma), or a history of angioedema.

This blood pressure medication may make you dizzy, particularly when you first start treatment or when the dose is increased. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit alcoholic beverages, as alcohol can further lower blood pressure. Rise slowly from sitting or lying positions to minimize dizziness.



Contraindications

Prinivil can cause serious (possibly fatal) harm to an unborn baby if used during pregnancy. Therefore, it is critically important to prevent pregnancy while taking this cardiovascular medication. Consult your doctor for more details and to discuss the use of reliable forms of birth control while taking lisinopril. If you are planning pregnancy, become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately and discontinue use.

This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using Prinivil, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: a history of an allergic reaction which included swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat (angioedema), whether related to previous ACE inhibitor use or hereditary. Do not take Prinivil in combination with a neprilysin inhibitor (e.g., sacubitril) due to the increased risk of angioedema.



Possible side effects

You may experience headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, dry cough, or blurred vision as your body adjusts to lisinopril. The persistent dry cough is one of the most commonly reported side effects of ACE inhibitors. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: fainting, decreased sexual ability, chest pain, signs of high potassium levels (such as muscle weakness or slow/irregular heartbeat), or signs of kidney problems (such as changes in the amount of urine).

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: change in the amount of urine, vision changes, signs of infection (e.g., fever, chills, persistent sore throat), or signs of angioedema (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat that may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing).



Drug interaction

Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first. The following medications may affect how lisinopril works or increase the risk of side effects:

nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs; e.g., ibuprofen, indomethacin, naproxen) — may reduce the blood pressure-lowering effect

diuretics (water pills) — may cause excessive blood pressure reduction

potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, amiloride, triamterene) — increased risk of hyperkalemia

medications that increase potassium levels (e.g., potassium supplements, salt substitutes containing potassium)

other medications that lower blood pressure (e.g., beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers)

The following medications may be affected by lisinopril or increase the risk of side effects:

lithium — lisinopril can increase lithium levels in the blood, potentially causing toxicity



Missed dose

If you miss a dose of Prinivil, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. Missing doses of your blood pressure medication can lead to sudden increases in blood pressure, so try to maintain a consistent daily routine.



Overdose

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Symptoms of a Prinivil overdose may include feeling extremely dizzy or light-headed, fainting, or dangerously low blood pressure. Immediate medical intervention is essential in cases of suspected lisinopril overdose.



Storage

Store Prinivil tablets at room temperature away from light and moisture. Storage temperature ranges differ according to different manufacturers, so consult your pharmacist for more information. Do not store in the bathroom, where humidity can degrade the medication. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
